Communication Strategies

16 June 2023

Hearing is fundamental for communication, and communication is the essence of life. It helps us to build relationships by allowing us to share our experiences, needs and helps us to connect with other.

Below we have some communication strategies that can help improve communication with people who have hearing loss.

  1. Face-to-face communication: When communicating with someone with hearing loss, it is essential to face them directly. This allows them to see your facial expressions and read your lips, which can help them understand what you are saying.
  2. Speak clearly and at a moderate pace: When speaking to someone with hearing loss, it is important to speak clearly and at a moderate pace. Do not shout or speak too slowly, as this can distort the sounds and make it harder for them to understand. Instead, speak at a natural pace, but with clear pronunciation.
  3. Minimise background noise: Background noise can make it difficult for people with hearing loss to hear and understand speech. When communicating with someone with hearing loss, try to minimise background noise by turning off the TV or radio, closing windows or doors, and moving to a quieter location.
  4. Use visual aids: Visual aids such as gestures, facial expressions, and body language can help people with hearing loss understand what you are saying. When communicating with someone with hearing loss, use visual aids to supplement your speech and help convey your message.
  5. Rephrase rather than repeat: When someone with hearing loss asks you to repeat something, try rephrasing it instead. This can help them understand the message without hearing the exact same words again. Also, avoid using complex language or technical jargon, as this can be difficult for them to understand.
  6. Use assistive devices: There are several assistive devices that can help people with hearing loss communicate more effectively. These include hearing aids, cochlear implants, and personal FM systems. If the person you are communicating with uses any of these devices, make sure they are in working order before beginning your conversation.
  7. Be patient and understanding: Finally, it is important to be patient and understanding when communicating with someone with hearing loss. It can be frustrating for them to constantly ask for repetition or clarification, so try to be as accommodating as possible. Remember, communication is a two-way street, and both parties need to work together to ensure effective communication.

We hope the above strategies are help for you and your communication partners. Having your hearing checked regularly and your hearing aids adjusted can also help with communication.
