Full hearing and diagnostic tests

22 January 2022

A full hearing test is a more involved assessment than our free hearing screening. When you come in to see us, we'll talk through your case history and any hearing problems you are having.

We carry out a full diagnostic hearing assessment, including:

  • an otoscopic examination (looking into your ear)
  • a pure tone audiometry, to test your hearing thresholds across various frequencies
  • a tympanometry, checking the mobility of your eardrum
  • acoustic reflex testing, measuring the acoustic muscle reflex in your middle ear
  • along with speech testing, to check your speech discrimination in quiet

Together, these tests can help reveal the source, and degree, of your hearing difficulty. We will write a full report to your Doctor and/or an Ear, Nose and Throat Specialists based on what we find. These tests are required for medical referrals or for fitting hearing aids.

Based in Christchurch and Timaru, our audiologists are fully qualified to perform tests and refer you to the right specialists following your time with us. Our audiologists are members of the New Zealand Audiological Society and an approved assessor for the Ministry of Health, ACC and Veteran's Affairs. They can help with hearing aid funding applications or any other questions you may have.
