Track Testing Motorsport Earplugs at the SCOPE Classic

22 February 2024

The Southern Hemisphere’s premier classic car racing event recently celebrated its 34th year at the Euromarque Motorsport Park at Ruapuna, near Christchurch. The Classic offers families and car fanatics an unrivalled chance to get up close and personal with some of the finest - and fastest - classic and historic cars from across New Zealand.

Part of the experience is walking the pits and taking the opportunity to talk to the drivers and mechanics. Clear communication and awareness of your environment are a priority.

Hearing aids with soft domes, or ear moulds that fill the ear canal can be used to control sounds such engine noise, but for those without these, filtered earplugs are a good option.

We tested the Serenity ChoiceTM Motorsport earplugs. These have a filter that reduces sounds but doesn’t block you off totally. You maintain awareness of what’s going on around you plus you can converse with those nearby – depending on the roar of classic V8 engines at the time!

Our tester wore the earplugs all day and described them as “Making the louder sounds comfortable, while keeping you very much part of the action”. From an acoustic perspective they have a more natural frequency response than foam ear plugs or earmuffs, allowing them to limit harmful sounds whilst preserving a more familiar sound quality.

Audiologists recommend the routine use of hearing protect such as Motorsport Earplugs as they can save ears from damage or preserve remaining hearing where a hearing loss is already present.

Serenity ChoiceTM plugs are fully re-useable. The filter comes with three earplug size options and a sturdy case. Visit the Bellbird Hearing Shop here to learn more.
