What is micro-suction?

Micro-suction wax removal is a highly effective and safe method for eliminating earwax blockages. Unlike traditional ear syringing or irrigation, micro-suction uses a gentle vacuum to remove excess wax without introducing water into the ear canal. This precise technique is performed under direct vision using a microscope, ensuring a thorough and safe cleaning process.

Does micro-suction hurt?

Micro-suction wax removal is generally a painless procedure and is well-tolerated by most people. Some clients find it quite loud. If the wax is dry and hard it may be uncomfortable when it is removed. Therefore, we recommend oiling your ears for a few nights prior to your appointment.

How should I prepare for my wax removal appointment?

We recommend using a few drops of any kind of cooking oil in the ears before your appointment. We have droppers available to purchase in clinic. Please do not use Waxsol, as this often makes the wax too soft and the experience less comfortable for you.

What is Ear Wax?

Ear wax, medically known as cerumen, is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal. It plays an essential role in maintaining ear health. Here's a closer look at what ear wax is and why it's important:

Composition:

Ear wax is a mixture of secretions from sebaceous and ceruminous glands in the ear canal.  It contains a combination of shed skin cells, hair, and other debris.

Functions of Ear Wax:

  • Protection: Ear wax acts as a protective barrier, preventing dust, dirt, and other foreign particles from reaching the eardrum.
  • Lubrication: It helps keep the skin in the ear canal moisturized, preventing dryness and itchiness.
  • Antimicrobial Properties: Ear wax has antibacterial and antifungal properties, reducing the risk of ear infections by inhibiting the growth of harmful microorganisms.
  • Self-Cleaning Mechanism: The ear is self-cleaning. Ear wax naturally moves out of the ear canal, carrying with it any trapped debris.

Signs You Might Need Ear Wax Removal

Ear wax is a natural substance that protects and lubricates your ears. However, sometimes it can build up and cause problems. Here are some signs that you might need to have your ear wax removed:

  • Hearing Loss: Experiencing a sudden or gradual reduction in hearing can be a sign of earwax buildup.
  • Earache or Pain: Discomfort or pain in the ear may indicate that earwax is pressing against the eardrum or ear canal.
  • Feeling of Fullness: A sensation of fullness or blockage in the ear can be caused by excessive earwax.
  • Ringing in the Ear (Tinnitus): Persistent ringing, buzzing, or other noises in the ear can be linked to earwax impaction.
  • Itchiness: Itching inside the ear can be a sign of wax accumulation.
  • Dizziness: Earwax buildup can sometimes cause balance issues or dizziness.
  • Discharge or Odour: Unusual discharge or a foul odour coming from the ear can indicate earwax problems.
  • Cough: In some cases, earwax can press on the nerves in the ear canal, leading to a persistent cough.

If you experience any of these symptoms, it's a good idea to arrange an appointment with our ear nurse. We can examine your ears and determine if earwax removal is necessary. Remember, it's important not to attempt to remove earwax yourself with cotton swabs or other objects, as this can push the wax further in and cause damage to your ear.
