A full diagnostic hearing test is a comprehensive assessment of your hearing ability. It is designed to identify the type and degree of hearing loss you may have and to determine the best course of action for treatment.

We will complete a hearing history, ear canal examination, immittance audiometry (including tympanometry and reflexes), air conduction, bone conduction and speech audiometry (including speech in noise testing).

Throughout this comprehensive assessment we use up-to-date equipment to investigate any underlying causes and advise you of the findings and your options. We will arrange onward referral if any medical investigation or treatment is required.

As a registered ACC provider we can apply to ACC for hearing loss cover, for those who have worked in noisy environments, if your hearing loss meets ACC’s criteria.

Our full diagnostic hearing assessment is suitable for Civil Aviation (CAA), Veterans Affairs, Doctors, Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) Specialists, and for those who have a known hearing loss.

This appointment includes a comprehensive report written to your doctor or a specialist of your choice. You will also receive a copy for your records.

Our clinicians are members of the New Zealand Audiological Society and an approved assessor for the Ministry of Health, ACC and Veteran's Affairs. They can help with hearing aid funding applications or any other questions you may have.

Based in Christchurch and Timaru, our clinicians are fully qualified to perform hearing assessment and refer you to the right specialists following your time with us.

What happens if you have a hearing loss?

After a comprehensive hearing test, our clinicians may recommend hearing aids as an effective solution to improve your hearing health. Here’s why opting for hearing aids can make a significant difference:

  1. Enhanced Hearing Clarity: Hearing aids are designed to amplify sounds, making it easier to hear conversations and environmental noises clearly, even in challenging listening environments.
  2. Improved Quality of Life: Better hearing contributes to enhanced communication, social interactions, and overall well-being. You'll feel more connected and confident in your daily activities.
  3. Preventing Cognitive Decline: Using hearing aids can help maintain cognitive function by keeping your auditory system active and engaged, reducing the risk of cognitive deterioration linked to untreated hearing loss.
  4. Custom Solutions: Our clinicians will recommend hearing aids that are tailored to your specific needs and lifestyle, ensuring maximum comfort and effectiveness. With various styles and advanced features, you’ll find the perfect fit for you. We are independent, which means, we are not owned by a manufacturer so we can recommend the best hearing aids for you.
  5. Ongoing Support: We are with you on your hearing journey - providing regular support and adjustments to ensure your hearing aids are performing optimally. Our team is dedicated to helping you adapt and get the most out of your hearing devices.

Investing in hearing aids following your hearing test is a proactive step towards better hearing health and a higher quality of life. Schedule your appointment today to explore the best hearing aid options for you.

Why should I book a full hearing assessment appointment?

Treating permanent hearing loss early is crucial for maintaining your hearing health over the long term. Keeping your auditory system and cognitive functions strong reduces the risk of deterioration.

Recent studies have shown a link between untreated hearing loss and the onset of dementia. While hearing loss alone does not cause dementia, it is considered a "modifiable risk factor," meaning it is something we can reliably and easily improve.

An independent study, the ACHIEVE study, has shown that hearing intervention can reduce cognitive deterioration over three years for older adults at increased risk for cognitive decline. This highlights the significant benefits of addressing hearing loss early.

What funding is available for hearing aids?

Purchasing hearing aids can be a significant investment, but there are several funding options available in New Zealand to help make them more affordable.

  1. Ministry of Health Hearing Aid Subsidy: This subsidy is available to adults (over the age of 16) who have a permanent hearing loss and are New Zealand residents who ordinarily live in New Zealand and are not covered under the Children’s Hearing Aid Funding Scheme or other specific funding from ACC or Veterans Affairs.
  2. Ministry of Health Hearing Aid Funding Scheme: For children and young people under 21 years (if you meet the criteria), and adults with complex needs or dual disabilities. You must also be a New Zealand resident who ordinarily lives in New Zealand
  3. ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation): ACC funding is available for those who have an accepted noise-induced hearing loss due to a work-related or accidental injury.
  4. Veterans' Affairs New Zealand: This funding is available to former service members with hearing loss related to their military service.
  5. Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ): Individuals on a low income or receiving a benefit may be eligible for additional support through WINZ.
  6. Charitable Organisations and Trusts: Various local and national organisations offer financial assistance for hearing aids.

Contact our Bellbird Hearing team, who can guide you through the application process for these funding options. They can provide the necessary assessments and documentation required to apply for financial assistance.

By exploring these funding options, you can significantly reduce the financial cost of purchasing hearing aids and ensure you receive the hearing support you need.
