Preparing for Your Ear Wax Removal Appointment

Preparing your ears before a micro-suction appointment can help soften ear wax and make the procedure more comfortable and effective. Learn how to safely use olive oil prior to your appointment and important situations where oil should not be used.

To help make your micro-suction ear wax removal appointment as comfortable and effective as possible, we recommend using olive oil (or another cooking oil) to soften the wax before your visit.

How to Apply Olive Oil

  1. Olive oil can be used at room temperature or gently warmed by placing the container in warm (not hot) water.
  2. Lie on your side with the affected ear facing upwards.
  3. Using a dropper or a clean teaspoon, carefully place 2–3 drops of oil into the ear canal.
  4. Gently massage the skin in front of your ear to help the oil work its way into the canal.
  5. Remain in the same position for 5–10 minutes to allow the oil to penetrate and soften the wax.
  6. If desired, place a small cotton wool ball in the outer ear to absorb any excess oil.
  7. Repeat the process on the other ear if required.

When to Use the Oil

Apply the oil once daily for the two days leading up to your wax removal appointment. Softening the wax beforehand helps ensure the micro-suction procedure is as comfortable and effective as possible.

Important Information

Do not use oil in your ears if:

  • You have been advised by a medical professional to keep your ears dry.
  • You have a grommet (ventilation tube) in your ear.
  • You have a perforated eardrum (a hole in the eardrum).

If you are unsure whether it is safe for you to use oil drops, please contact our clinic for advice before your appointment.
