Free Hearing Screen in Christchurch & Timaru

At Bellbird Hearing, we offer a free hearing screening to help you quickly and easily check your hearing health.

A hearing screen is simple, non-invasive, and designed to give you a clear indication of whether your hearing is within a normal range or if further testing may be needed.

This service is free for all clients aged 18 and over and is available at both our Christchurch and Timaru clinics.

What is a hearing screening?

A free hearing screening is a quick check of your hearing ability. It is not a full diagnostic test, but it can help identify early signs of hearing loss.

During your appointment, we will:

  • Discuss your hearing and medical history
  • Examine your ear canals
  • Test your hearing across a range of frequencies

The appointment is quick, comfortable, and designed to give you an initial understanding of your hearing health.

Is a free hearing screening right for you?

A hearing screening is a great starting point if:

  • You are unsure whether you have hearing loss
  • Friends or family have mentioned your hearing may not be as good
  • You want a quick check of your hearing health
  • You have no significant ear or hearing concerns

If your screening results suggest hearing loss, we can arrange a full diagnostic hearing assessment for a more detailed investigation.

If you already have concerns about your hearing or ear health, we usually recommend booking a full hearing test instead of a screening.

Why check your hearing?

Hearing loss often develops gradually, which means many people don’t notice changes until communication becomes difficult.

Regular hearing checks can:

  • Help detect hearing changes early
  • Provide reassurance about your hearing health
  • Support better communication and quality of life
  • Help you stay on top of long-term hearing changes

In New Zealand, around one in three people over the age of 65 experience hearing loss. The good news is that early detection and management can make a significant difference.

We recommend having your hearing checked every one to two years.

What happens if a hearing loss is found?

If your free hearing screen indicates a possible hearing loss, we can book you in for a full diagnostic hearing assessment to investigate further.

This allows us to better understand the type and degree of hearing loss and discuss suitable treatment options, including hearing aids if appropriate.

Other hearing screening options

If you prefer, you can also complete an online hearing screening from home. This can be a helpful first step before booking an in-clinic appointment.

However, an in-person screening provides a more accurate clinical overview of your hearing health.
